Frequently Asked Questions

Expert answers to common questions about knee and shoulder injuries, treatment
options, and recovery.

Knee Injuries
How long is recovery after ACL reconstruction?

Recovery varies by athlete and sport, but most athletes can return to light activities within 3-4 months. Full return to competitive sports typically occurs 6-9 months post-surgery, following proper rehabilitation and clearance.

Should I choose meniscus repair or removal?

Meniscus repair is preferred for younger athletes and tears in the vascular zone to preserve knee function and prevent arthritis. Partial meniscectomy may be necessary for complex tears or older patients, with faster initial recovery but higher long-term arthritis risk.

What is patellar stabilization surgery?

Patellar stabilization involves procedures like MPFL reconstruction to prevent recurrent kneecap dislocations. It restores proper tracking and stability, allowing athletes to return to sports without the fear of kneecap instability.

Shoulder Injuries
Will I regain full strength after rotator cuff repair?

With proper surgical technique and rehabilitation, most patients recover full or near-full strength. Success depends on tear size, age, and adherence to the rehabilitation protocol. Most athletes return to their sport within 4-6 months.

What is the difference between dislocation and instability?

Dislocation is a complete separation of the ball from the socket, often requiring emergency reduction. Instability is recurrent looseness or partial dislocations. Treatment ranges from physical therapy to surgical stabilization depending on severity.

Is arthroscopic surgery better than open surgery?

For most shoulder procedures, arthroscopy offers smaller incisions, less pain, and faster recovery. However, some complex reconstructions may require open approaches. Dr. Zusmanovich uses the least invasive method appropriate for your condition.

Treatment Process
What should I bring to my first appointment?

Bring your insurance card, photo ID, any relevant medical records or imaging (X-rays, MRIs), a list of current medications, and completed patient forms. Wear comfortable clothing that allows examination of the injured area.

Will I need surgery for my injury?

Not always. Dr. Zusmanovich exhausts conservative treatments first, including physical therapy, injections, and activity modification. Surgery is recommended only when necessary for optimal recovery or when conservative treatments have failed.

How long does arthroscopic surgery take?

Most arthroscopic procedures take 1-2 hours. You typically go home the same day with specific post-operative instructions. Total time at the surgery center is usually 4-5 hours including preparation and recovery.

General
When should I see a sports medicine specialist?

Seek immediate care for acute injuries with severe pain, swelling, or inability to move the joint. For persistent pain lasting more than 2-3 weeks, affecting performance, or causing mechanical symptoms (clicking, locking), consult a specialist.

Does Dr. Zusmanovich treat non-athletes?

Absolutely! Dr. Zusmanovich treats all active individuals, from weekend warriors to professional athletes. The same advanced techniques and personalized care apply to anyone seeking to return to their active lifestyle.

What insurance plans are accepted?

We accept most major insurance plans including Blue Cross Blue Shield, Aetna, Cigna, UnitedHealthcare, Medicare, and workers’ compensation. Our office can help verify your coverage and explain payment options before your visit.

How quickly can I get an appointment?

We offer appointments within 48 hours for most cases. For urgent injuries, we provide same-day or next-day appointments. We also offer walk in hours for patients at our West Babylon location. Dr. Zusmanovich is available for walk-in patients on Mondays 8am-8pm, Thursdays 8am-5pm and Fridays 1pm-4pm.
